Make Marks with Loren Sana-Viel

Accessible collaborative drawing sessions inviting people of all ages to slow down, create and connect.

Drawing is one of the most immediate ways we can communicate and connect. Long before we learn language, we make marks.
Each session becomes part of a growing body of drawings documenting the traces, conversations and relationships that emerge through drawing together. Working with simple materials you are encouraged to explore playful mark-making, curiosity and expression rather than focusing on producing a finished outcome.

Whether joining with your baby, family, friends or independently, you become part of a shared drawing process where individual marks gradually develop into larger collective works.
Every contribution becomes part of something bigger.

Collaborative Drawing Experiments (2025-2026)

My first collaborative drawings emerged organically after becoming a mother. Drawing with my baby, and now toddler, became a simple way for us to slow down, connect and regulate together. Those early drawings revealed the creative potential of shared mark-making and became the starting point for Make Marks.

Make Marks has grown directly from my artistic practice. For more than a decade I have explored how to create spaces for possibility and community. My work begins by allowing intuition, material behaviour and human interaction to shape the outcome. Make Marks extends that methodology into a shared environment of participatory drawing experiments for people of all ages to create together.

Drawing allows us to explore ideas without needing the right words. It encourages attention, curiosity and presence, creating moments of shared focus that are increasingly rare in everyday life. For many people it is also an opportunity to step away from screens and reconnect with creativity without pressure.

Rather than teaching people what to draw, I create the conditions for marks to emerge through observation, play and collaboration. Every session develops differently depending on the people who take part. While initially developed through drawing with my daughter, Make Marks is designed for everyone. Creativity is a lifelong practice, and the sessions invite people of all ages to experience the simple act of making marks together.

Further Studio Practice

Surrender (2016)

A series of ink drawings inspired by the Taoist principle of wu wei; effortless action. Ink was dropped onto paper and drawn out using sharpened twigs. Through intuitive response rather than control, organic forms emerged. The work was made during a significant period of personal transition. I developed a simple daily ritual as a way to self-regulate and create space, exploring surrender, intuition and the creative potential of uncertainty. A video documenting the process was presented within an installation that invited visitors into the environment in which the work was created.

Untitled (2021)

Drawing and etching studies exploring intuitive mark-making and repetition, developments of earlier ink drawings.
