Holding Space

Selected works supporting my DYCP application.

These selected works span more than a decade of practice. Through recent reflection and archiving I have recognised a consistent methodology running throughout: creating structures that introduce unpredictability, responding to what emerges, and allowing transformation to unfold through the process itself. Across drawing, photography, moving image, installation and collaboration, this enquiry has remained constant while the forms through which it is expressed continue to evolve.

Surrender (2016)

A series of ink drawings inspired by the Taoist principle of wu wei; effortless action. Drops of ink were released onto paper and drawn out using hand-carved twigs, allowing forms to emerge through response rather than control. The work explored surrender, intuition, transformation and the creative potential of uncertainty. A video documenting the process was presented within an installation that invited visitors into the environment in which the work was created.

Soft (2016)

Developed during a residency at Margate Arts Club, Soft was an immersive multi-screen installation combining moving image and sound. Four videos of varying durations looped alongside three independently looping soundscapes by Duval Timothy, Klein and Jacob Samuels, creating constantly shifting relationships between sound and image. The work explored perception, emergence and the creation of conditions for experience rather than directing a fixed outcome.

Broken Camera Series: 001 Over Exposed (2016)

Photographs created capturing landscapes intuitively using damaged equipment and unpredictable image-making processes. The work embraces error, disruption and the creative possibilities that emerge when control is relinquished.

Broken Camera Series: 002 Boughs of Hackney (2016)

Exploring observations of forms and shades of trees in Hackney Downs Park, East London

Tangled (2016)

A moving image and poetry work created using analogue MiniDV recordings of tree branches filmed at close range and abstracted through movement, framing and sound. A spoken poem accompanies the imagery, its voice pitched down to create a slower, more contemplative atmosphere. The work explores observation, perception and transformation.

Broken Camera Series: 003 Joshua Tree (2017)

Exploring the landscapes and tones of Joshua Tree National Park in California

Broken Camera Series: 004 Dream/Delusion (2018)

Exploring movement capturing a walk along the Southbank, London.

Softer / Higher (2020)

A series of experimental moving image and sound works exploring observation, atmosphere and attention. Created through abstracted MiniDV recordings of natural environments and self-produced soundscapes, the works sit between documentation and meditation, inviting slower ways of seeing and listening. Developed during periods of isolation throughout Covid, these works explore the relationship between inner and outer landscapes, extending themes of emergence, perception and contemplation present throughout my wider practice.

Untitled (2021)

Drawing experimentation and developments using charcoal.

Broken Camera Series: 005 Caliu (2022)

Exploring observations of the landscape, shapes and tones of Moralet, countryside of Alicante, Spain.

Broken Camera Series: 006 Grief Island (2023)

Exploring observations of the landscape, shapes and tones of the coastline of Mykonos, Greece.

40 Weeks (2024)

A drawing practice developed during pregnancy. Repetitive mark-making became a structure through which physical, emotional and psychological transformation could be observed and processed over time.

Untitled (2026)

Drawings created through shared mark-making processes. Working within simple structures while allowing unpredictable interactions to emerge, these experiments explore authorship, care, connection and collective creativity. These works represent an ongoing exploration of how the methodologies within my practice might operate in collaborative and participatory contexts accessible to all ages.

Recent reflection and archiving have revealed a consistent methodology running throughout more than a decade of work.

Across drawing, photography, moving image, installation and collaboration, I repeatedly create structures that introduce unpredictability, respond to what emerges, and allow transformation to unfold through the process itself.

Through Holding Space, I aim to deepen, articulate and expand this methodology while developing the professional infrastructure necessary to support a sustainable exhibiting practice.

Create a structure → introduce unpredictability → respond → allow emergence.
